Diplomacy for truce in Gaza

Israel's war on Gaza Strip has killed over 20,000 Palestinians as it expanded its offensive and ordered tens of thousands more people to leave their homes.

The deaths in Gaza amount to nearly 1% of the territory’s prewar population. Israel’s aerial and ground offensive has been one of the most devastating military campaigns in recent history, displacing nearly 85% of Gaza’s 2.3 million people and levelling wide swaths of the coastal enclave. More than half a million people in Gaza — a quarter of the population — are starving, according to a report from the United Nations and other agencies.

After many delays, the UN Security Council adopted a watered-down resolution on Friday calling for immediately speeding up aid deliveries to desperate civilians in Gaza. The resolution was the first on the war to make it through the council after the US vetoed two earlier ones calling for humanitarian pauses and a full ceasefire.

The GCC welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council resolution, expressing hope that it will contribute to alleviating the suffering of the people of the Gaza.

Meanwhile, Qatar continues political and diplomatic efforts to reach a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The country had played a pivotal role in brokering a truce in Gaza earlier, which ended with resumption of hostilities.

World leaders repose trust in Qatar as a reliable mediator for conflict resolution. The country has become the centre of diplomatic efforts to end bloodshed and find a just solution to the Palestinian issue since the beginning of the war on October 7

Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani met in Doha with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordan H E Dr. Ayman Al Safadi on Saturday. The two sides discussed developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, besides ways for de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza.

The Prime Minister stressed the immediate end of Israeli aggression in Gaza, issuing of a binding UN Security Council resolution on ceasefire and allowing sufficient humanitarian aid in all areas of the coastal enclave. He reiterated Qatar’s continued efforts with Jordan and the international community for truce.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has said that there is a need for immediate ceasefire. In a press conference, UNRWA spokesperson Tamara Alrifai said that it is shocking that politics stands in the way of survival of 2.2 million people in Gaza.
