Environment preservation is a top priority for Qatar government as the nation is well aware of the need to maintain a balance between growth and environment and also the challenges in the way. Qatar’s environmental concerns and commitments are not farce but through its earnest and vision oriented moves, the nation protects and preserves the environment.
The campaign, under the slogan ‘Together We Care About Our Coral Reefs’, launched by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), represented by Natural Reserve Department, to clean the coral reefs along Sealine Beach at southeastern coast of the country, puts spotlight on the commitment of the nation in preserving environment. Various institutions and agencies, such as Lekhwiya, Al Ghais Center for Diving and ReefTech for the Production of Industrial Coral Reefs, deserve huge round of appreciations for supporting this campaign and for standing firm for Qatar’s sustainability visions.
This is not the first time the Ministry launched such a campaign, as in 2009 a similar campaign was launched to clean coral reefs at Sealine Beach, where 101 industrial coral reefs were placed at Sealine Beach and 440 coral reefs in the sea.
The cleaning is of vital importance as it fosters the rapid growth of these coral reefs by 70 percent. The cleaning in fact preserves the seabed of the territorial waters of the State of Qatar from pollutants, which harm marine life. It saves coral reefs which are affected by human pressures and other pollutants. Coral reefs are one of the integrated environmental systems that are of great economic and tourist importance.
The campaign to preserve coral reefs is just one among the thousands of measures Qatar puts in place to protect its environment. By recycling water and waste materials, reducing air pollution, raising the level of efficiency in energy use, increasing green areas and encouraging investments in green economy, Qatar projects a novel path to sustainable future for the global community. Qatar has not spared any effort in keeping green buildings standards in government buildings and is encouraging private sector to adopt these practices.
By promising an environmental-friendly and carbon neutral 2022 World Cup, Qatar has highlighted its commitment towards the cause. The recently held Qatar Sustainability Summit well projected Qatar’s future plans on environment to take sustainability practices to a higher level.
Qatar’s environmental concerns and sincere wish to address environmental issues are not something new to the world. The nation uses all possible platforms, local, regional and global, for raising its concerns and also showing a path to sustainability.
