Prosperity and wellbeing of the citizens has been the focus of Qatar’s development agenda over the decades. The country’s leadership has singularly prioritised continued progress and prosperity. In 2008, the State adopted Qatar National Vision 2030, a blueprint for transforming the country into an advanced society and securing a high standard of living for its people for generations to come through sustainable development in all fields. Guiding principles for QNV 2030 are: protecting public and personal freedoms; protecting moral and religious values and traditions; and ensuring security, stability and equal opportunities.
Since then, the country has made a lot of progress on four interconnected pillars of the National Vision: Human development, social development, economic development, and environmental development.
Qatar’s progress on these fronts has also been recognised by a number of global bodies. Recently Qatar has been ranked 46th in the list of the world’s most prosperous countries. Safe environment, advanced health services, improved education system and transformative infrastructure were among key factors reinforcing Qatar’s top rankings in the Legatum Prosperity Index 2021. The index, issued by the Legatum Institute, analyses the performance of 167 nations across 67 policy-focused elements, measured by 300 country-level indicators. Qatar scored better than many countries in the region.
Among all the categories, Qatar achieved the highest score of 88.8 percent in safety and security category, coming at No 15 globally. It ranked 20th in ‘enterprise conditions’; 26th in social capital; 28th in economic quality; and 39th each in health and infrastructure and market access. Qatar ranked No1 in the Middle and North Africa in ‘safety and security’ and enterprise conditions.
Several surveys have ranked Qatar highly for safety and living standards. Qatar maintained its position as the ‘Safest Country’ in the world according to Numbeo Crime Index by Country 2022, out of 142 surveyed nations. Numbeo also ranked Doha as the second safest city in the world. In the quality of life index, Qatar ranked 27th and third in the Arab world. In health, Qatar ranked 18th globally and first in the Arab world.
Qatar’s place at the top of global rankings demonstrates its commitment to the safety and development of infrastructures to enable quality living for citizens and residents. This also puts the country in a promising position ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022, with visitors assured of a secure and booming environment.
