DOHA: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) has announced the third rescue operation for dugongs in cooperation with the environmental activist Khalifa Saleh Omar Al-Hamidi, who reported the third case of a dugong stranding in the Khor Al Adaid area, within one month.
The MoECC said that it has taken the necessary measures to transport the baby dugong to the Fuwairit (Sea Turtle Project) area, and has been placed in an equipped pond adjacent to 'Ocean' and 'Oscar'.
"The baby dugong was named Olivia, her superficial wounds were treated and she received proper care and first aid to ensure her safety," said the Ministry in a statement on Twitter.

On 23 July 2022, the MoECC announced a rescue of a second dugong pup also found in the Khor Al Daid area and was named 'Oscar'. This was after the first rescue operation on 5 July 2022, when the Ministry named the rescued baby dugong 'Ocean' — the first dugong with a name in the region.
The Ministry said that preparations will be made for the release of the rescued dugongs to their original living environment in the country, after ensuring their safety and their ability to rely on themselves.
