DOHA: Qatar yesterday launched the one-year countdown to next year’s IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, promising high-octane action at the state-of-the-art Khalifa International Stadium.

The September 27-October 6 mega event will witness world’s best athletes battling for honours in a venue that will use cooling technology for the entire duration of the championship. The event will witness a ‘night marathon’ on Corniche.

“We are ready. Today is a very important day in our readiness preparations. Ready to be gracious hosts. Ready to connect the world of athletics. Ready to inspire a new generation and ready to welcome athletes and fans from all corners of the world,” Dahlan Al Hamad, Director-General of the IAAF World Athletics Championships Local Organising Committee and Vice-President of the IAAF, said yesterday.

“Today we are starting the clock on our one-year countdown to the championships. As we sit here, I hope you can see the track is laid and ready to compete on. The new cooling technology is on right now and offering a climate close to what the athletes and fans will experience in 365 days’ time. “Our schedule is out, our tourism infrastructure is in place and we have revealed information on our logo and ticketing today. Al Hamad said fans would fill up the refurbished Khalifa International Stadium for track and field’s biggest event next year.
