Ooredoo did it again and made the country proud once again. It takes immense hardwork and dedication to be the first in the world to launch a live, commercially available 5G network and conduct the first international 5G call in the region.

Ooredoo’s call took place between Ooredoo Group CEO Sheikh Saud bin Nasser Al Thani and Ooredoo Kuwait CEO Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulla bin Mohammed Al Thani.

Speaking about the landmark call, Sheikh Saud bin Nasser Al Thani said: “Being at the forefront of technological development, to ensure our customers and Qatari citizens and residents will be the first to enjoy the incredible capabilities of 5G, is of paramount importance to us and we are delighted to announce the success of this call, marking yet another crucial step along the way to widespread, life-changing 5G adoption.”

The magnitude of this achievement is clear when one understands that there are no smart devices commercially available in the world to support this great fete. Ooredoo is able to use 5G through the apps that are developed by itself. The telecommunications giant is waiting for manufacturers to start producing 5G capable mobile devices to make the technology available to the common man. Once these devices are produced,

Ooredoo will be again the first-in-the-world to make them available for immediate use, as the networks are well ahead with readiness. Technology experts say that devices capable of dealing with 5G technology will be available by the third quarter of this year and Qatar will be among the first countries that provide the 5G services.

The new lifestyle changing technology 5G is the fifth-generation cellular wireless broadband that will eventually replace the 4G LTE connection. With 5G, users will see exponentially faster download and upload speeds. Latency, or the time it takes devices to communicate with each other wireless networks, will also drastically decrease.

Ooredoo said that it is not just launching 5G in Doha, but also working to update 1,200 of its network stations. Ooredoo is so fast that it is aiming to update 100 network stations within the next three months.

Beyond its speed, this milestone is a great step for Internet of Things, and will pave the way for a host of smart technologies like smart cars, VR, AR and drones to be part of the everyday lives. It would also have a hugely positive impact on many sectors like health and education, and on the entertainment industry, such as sporting events, such as 2022 Football World Cup, which will be built on the 5G technology. So the future is here with Ooredoo.
