Qatar once again cemented its unwavering stance on zero tolerance for terrorism with its recent commitment to the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT).
Over the years, Qatar has played a significant role in maintaining security and combating terrorism. It continues to take the necessary actions to ensure the region and the world is free of violent extremism through bilateral, regional and multilateral partnerships with countries and relevant institutions.
Qatar has also constantly maintained that investment in productive and creative platforms that will foster friendships and cordial bonds should be a priority for nations worldwide. Through its education, scientific, research, cultural and sports investment and infrastructure, Qatar’s commitment to preventing violent extremism (PVE) cannot be undervalued.
Yesterday, Qatar pledged $15m annually for three years (2024-2026) to support counter-terrorism efforts at the national, regional, and international levels and the UN’s central role in achieving this crucial goal.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, H E Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi stressed Qatar’s commitment to making all possible efforts in continuous cooperation with the UN and various international partners to get rid of the scourge of terrorism and violent extremism during the Annual Forum of Beneficiaries of Technical Assistance hosted by Qatar and the UNOCT.
According to the Minister, Qatar understands the importance of global partnerships in driving out the scourge of terrorism and emphasises that the United Nations plays a central role in activating multilateral cooperation.
Last year, the UNOCT Programme Office on Parliamentary Engagement in Preventing and Countering Terrorism opened in Doha. It was announced then that the Shura Council would provide a $12.5m contribution to UNOCT for five years, as well as premises and operational support for the Programme Office.
UNOCT will manage the work of the Programme Office and administer its activities. Besides, Doha also hosts the International Hub on Behavioural Insights to Counter Terrorism, which opened a year earlier.
These developments are also within Qatar’s mediation role in the region to ensure peace and stability. The recent evacuation efforts in Afghanistan and calls for dialogues between the Taliban and neighbouring countries are examples of Qatar’s steadfastness. Also, Qatar has always underlined the importance of understanding, dialogue and diplomacy in regional and global discords, which would guarantee peace and stability for all.
