Clean energy to the fore

The use of natural gas has been gaining more acceptance and prominence for the last decade as viable alternative for high-carbon energy resources as it causes lesser emissions of harmful gases. The world has been increasingly facing the threat of global warming for a long time now and leaders and activists have been calling for all-out efforts to mitigate the effects of rising temperature which has already become tangible with the ever-changing weather pattern affecting the whole universe.

This phenomenon demanded world’s attention to finding alternative fuels to meet the needs of energy-guzzling industries, transport, heating purpose etc. Experts and scientists have been suggesting several options such as renewable energy sources like wind power photo-voltaic energy and son on, but natural gas offered a reliable alternative as it ensures regular supply of low-carbon fuel. But for the last couple of years, the energy industry has been going through a turbulent time as COVID-19 pandemic dealt a blow to the market as demand started dipping gradually. Now, with a tangible relief from the pandemic and a harsher winter in Europe, demand started suddenly picking up. The geo-political situation in some producing countries and supply lines started affecting the availability forcing major consumer countries to look for more reliable suppliers.

In this scenario, the 6th Summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum took place in Doha yesterday provided a vibrant platform for discussing the dynamics of production, supply and consumption of natural gas. Heads of governments, ministers and experts discussed several aspects connected to natural gas such as mitigating climate change, mechanisms to control emissions and to find a mutually acceptable environment for producers and consumers. At the conclusion of the Summit, Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani appreciated the delegates for adopting the Doha Declaration, which ‘coincides with a new phase in which natural gas contributes to charting a course towards a more sustainable future.’ “Our Summit confirmed our conviction that dialogue is the optimum way to achieve consensus, enhance cooperation and protect interests of producers and consumers for the good of their people,” the Amir said.

Recently, the United States and Europe have been turning their attention to Qatar for acquiring natural gas in case they face a shortage of supplies from other sources which according to them are being threatened by ever-changing political scenes. Qatar is keen to find a lasting solution to the world’s clean energy needs and as the most important and reliable supplier of harmless energy, the country has been always ready to go any possible extra miles to alleviate the hardship of the consumer countries.
