As the designated Official Sustainable City of Expo 2023 Doha, Msheireb Properties is gearing up to showcase the remarkable achievements of Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD), aligning perfectly with the event’s theme, “Green Desert, Better Environment,” and its four subthemes: Modern Agriculture, Technology and Innovation, Environmental Awareness, and Sustainability.
Msheireb Properties, the developer of the world’s first fully built smart and sustainable city district, is set to exemplify how MDD embodies these four key subthemes. “MDD clearly illustrates what the use of innovative solutions can achieve across all four of this year’s Expo focus areas,” Msheireb Properties CEO, Ali Al Kuwari said. In Modern Agriculture, MDD actively fosters a community of eco-conscious residents and businesses. It offers training and educational programmes to promote sustainability, including the launching of the Green Programme designed for resident F&B outlets to incorporate environmentally friendly practices.
Technology and Innovation are at the forefront of MDD’s urban design. It features a green tram system powered by clean energy sources and dedicated lanes for cyclists and pedestrians, ensuring sustainable mobility. The district also implements advanced waste management systems, prioritising recycling and reuse, with many buildings achieving Green or Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. On the topic of Environmental Awareness, MDD’s design seamlessly integrates with the local environment. It employs technology to maximise comfort with minimal energy use, creating shade, minimising heat gains, and harnessing natural forces like sun and wind while preserving the region’s natural habitat.
Regarding Sustainability, MDD has achieved an impressive 30% reduction in energy consumption through smart building design and extensive solar energy capture.
Msheireb Properties’ commitment to Expo 2023 Doha aligns with its belief that sharing knowledge and experiences in sustainable building, construction, and urban planning is essential in addressing environmental challenges. MDD aims to demonstrate what the future of cities can look like by showcasing urban communities designed in harmony with the environment through sustainable practices.
Expo 2023 Doha, scheduled from October 2 to March 28, 2024, is anticipated to draw over three million visitors. MDD, as the Official Sustainable City, is well-prepared to host millions of visitors from around the world, offering them a unique experience that reflects Qatar’s culture and heritage. The district’s Retail Quarter features attractions such as Barahat, Msheireb Galleria, M7, and Doha Design District. Meanwhile, the Heritage Quarter provides an authentic experience of Qatari heritage through meticulously maintained and renovated heritage house museums.
