Qatar implemented many programmes and projects to curb air pollutants, reduce CO2 emissions, and increase reliance on renewable energy to achieve sustainability and address climate change.
The country places environmental sustainability among its priorities, based on Qatar National Vision 2030, which has allocated its fourth pillar to environmental development, in a way that ensures harmony and consistency between economic and social development and environmental protection.
Qatar Research, Development, and Innovation (QRDI) Council yesterday launched “Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Sustainability Community” for enhancing cooperation among national institutions to address sustainability challenges. The community constitutes a national platform that brings together specialists, experts, and decision-makers to exchange knowledge and develop innovative solutions to help achieve the environment-related goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) is implementing numerous environmental projects and initiatives for protecting the environment in Qatar, diversifying and preserving its resources, and mitigating the effects of climate change.
They include the Marine Environment Monitoring and Control Project, 5G Environmental Impact Study Initiative, Project to Enhance Terrestrial and Coastal Environmental Protection, Secondary Calibration Laboratory Project, Plant 10 Million Trees by 2030 Initiative, and Sea Turtle Protection Project, among many more.
The Ministry is keen to build an integrated environmental system in cooperation with various parties concerned, aiming to protect natural resources, reduce emissions, promote the circular economy, and address accelerating environmental challenges.
The Strategy of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change aims to support environmental sustainability, striking a balance with development needs. It further aims to enhance Qatar’s ability to adapt to climate change, protect the environment, and conserve its natural resources. To achieve these goals, the strategy focuses on consolidating both institutional and societal cooperation, in addition to capitalising on general environmental awareness among the wider population.
Reflecting Qatar’s national targets and its commitment to environmental sustainability, the strategy includes a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, the restoration of 30% of affected natural habitats.
