Qatar has always played a crucial role in promoting peace in different part of the world. Qatar Fund For Development (QFFD) with Qatar Charity (QC) and International Centre for Sports Security (ICSS), on June 3, launched an initiative to promote peace and development through sport for internally displaced people (IDPs) in Darfur, Sudan, under the title “Sport for Peace and Development”. The new initiative comes within the framework of the Doha peace document for Darfur in western Sudan and within the ‘Save the Dream’ initiative.

In line with the ‘Save the Dream’ initiative on promoting sport and its educational values for young people and children affected by conflict and crisis situations, the “Sport for Peace and Development” initiative, supported by Qatar Development Fund and Qatar Charity, will be launched in June 2018 for displaced people in Darfur, Sudan. The first round of activities will take place in El Fasher in North Darfur. The initiative will be implemented with the participation of Save the Dream’s key partners such as Qatar Olympic Committee, Qatar Football Association, Aspire Academy, Qatar Stars League and Al Jazeera Center for Human Rights.

The project will also consider the participation of international partners such as Mission 89 and the participation of influential sports personalities such as Cameroon’s Roger Milla and Kenya’s famous runner Tegla Loroupe.

The head of the Darfur Peace Office, Majdi Khalafallah has lauded the great role played by Qatar in supporting the peace process in Darfur and achieving stability and comprehensive peace in the country.

Khalafallah said in a statement to the Sudanese radio on Friday that the ongoing Qatari support enabled the Sudanese government to consolidate peace in Darfur and fulfill its commitment to peace.

He affirmed that the Doha peace document is the basis of the peace process in the region. It is a comprehensive and open peace document for everyone who wants to join the peace process, he added.

The Doha Peace Document was signed by the Sudanese government and the Liberation and Justice Movement on July 14, 2011 in the presence of representatives of Burkina Faso, the African Union, the United Nations and Qatar, which mediated between the parties over 30 months of negotiations. The document includes an essential element to resolve the Darfur crisis, which is the sharing of wealth and power between the Khartoum government and the Darfur movements, as well as addressing key issues of the armed conflict in the region, such as compensation for the displaced, asylum and the administrative status of the region, where it was decided to conduct a referendum to resolve the identity of Darfur, being a single province or states.

Qatar’s ongoing efforts will resolve conflicts and bring peace to the world and make it a better peaceful place.
