Ata time when the world is fighting a catastrophic disease which has killed over 200,000 people and crippled economies, the State of Qatar has emerged as a leader in this global fight against the pandemic. The country has not only implemented a well-coordinated and effective strategy against the disease at home, but it has also aided the global efforts against the contagion. Doha has sent tonnes of essential medical and health supplies to a number of countries in the region and beyond to help them in the fight against the pandemic. Qatar Fund for Development delivered 45 tonnes of medical assistance to Tunisia, Algeria, Rwanda and Nepal on Wednesday. The State of Qatar has also sent aid to Iran, Lebanon and Italy. While these supplies will strengthen the healthcare systems in the recipient nations, the initiative also reinforces the idea of global cooperation and the belief to win this battle together.
Qatar’s response to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has won the praise from the UN representatives and several governments. The country’s healthcare system has been lauded for providing worldclass medical care to everybody who lives in Qatar. The government has also taken a number of measures to protect private businesses and expatriate workers in the country from the adverse economic impact of the pandemic. As the country witnessed a significant increase in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in recent days during what the healthcare officials said were the peak days of the outbreak in the country and the region, Qatar’s healthcare network has coped with the challenge really well. More than 1,200 patients have already fully recovered from the disease while the number of patients requiring intensive care has also fallen. The country’s healthcare system, which has managed all the cases very effectively, is well-equipped and well-staffed to handle the load.
A number of hospitals and health centers have been dedicated to treat COVID-19 patients exclusively while field hospitals have also been set up as a contingency plan. At a time when healthcare systems around the globe are overwhelmed, Qatar’s public healthcare has successfully dealt with all the challenges of the pandemic. On Wednesday, H H the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani visited a ventilator manufacturing facility at Qatar Science and Technology Park, which will produce as estimated 2,000 devices every week. The local production will not only meet the demand in the country but will also cater to increased demand for respirators around the globe.
