Washington: Muriel Bowser, Mayor of Washington met with H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) at the headquarters of the US State Department.
Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad, President of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) as well as a number of the IOC Members and Terry McAuliffe, Governor of Virginia were also present on the occasion.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the two-day General Assembly meetings of the ANOC in Washington. The American capital city of Washington is hosting the ANOC General Assembly meetings with participation of 206 national Olympic committees and international sports federations where the ANOC will presents its awards for the top athletes from the five Continental Games which took place across 2014 and 2015. Meanwhile, QOC) Secretary General Dr Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari said the ongoing success of the International Paralympic Committee’s Athletics World Championships (Doha 2015) is a result of united efforts from the Qatari people who aim to raise the name of their country in all international platforms.
Dr Al Kuwari said the huge success would not have been achieved if it had not been for the unlimited support of the country’s wise leadership and the patronage of QOC President Sheikh Joaan who offered and still offers all capacities in order for the tournament to achieve unprecedented global success.
Dr Al Kuwari, who heads the tournament’s organising committee, expressed his delight and pride that the 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships in its 7th edition is the biggest ever in terms of participation, and has witnessed the highest number of broken records. He added that staging the event reflects Qatar’s humanitarian role on all fronts, particularly regarding people with disabilities who deserve more care and attention in their societies and integration in development activities, including the sports field.
