DOHA: Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) HE Maryam bint Abdullah Al-Attiyah yesterday met in New York with Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of UN Women Sima Bahous.
The meeting discussed several topics of mutual interest and explored ways to strengthen cooperation to promote and empower women’s rights. Al-Attiyah also met with Dima Al-Khatib, Director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC). She highlighted the leading role played by UN Women in supporting issues of equality and women’s empowerment at both the international and regional levels, reaffirming the NHRC’s commitment to strengthening partnership and cooperation with the United Nations system in all areas that serve the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women.
She pointed out the ongoing cooperation in combating gender-based violence, both nationally and internationally, including supporting and participating in UN Women’s global campaigns.
Al-Attiyah affirmed that Qatar has made remarkable progress toward achieving full gender equality. She referred to the NHRC’s efforts in this regard and the steps taken to advance this approach through various events, seminars involving decision-makers, experts, and human rights advocates, in addition to community awareness efforts led by the Committee.
