The bronze-winning Qatar volleyball team received a rousing welcome on return.
Doha, Qatar: Qatar Volleyball Association (QVA) President Ali Ghanem Al Kuwari praised the first team’s show after they won the bronze medal at the 22nd Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship in Iran.
Talking to Qatar News Agency (QNA) yesterday after welcoming the team upon their arrival in Doha, Al Kuwari said winning Qatar's first medal in the tournament's history is a big achievement for country's volleyball.
He noted that the team secured the bronze medal after defeating China who are ahead the Qatari team in the world rankings, pointing out that the team played strong matches in the tournament.
In the semi-finals, they faced the Japanese team who are fifth in the world rankings. Despite their ranking, Qatar played a strong match and managed to win one of the rounds of the match, he added.
The Qatari team await upcoming events, including the Asian Games and the 2024 Olympics qualifiers, he said, pointing out that the QVA will ensure that the team have appropriate preparation for them. He stressed that the results achieved by Qatari sports in general were a result of the support provided by the wise leadership.
Al Kuwari also noted that the Qatari team advanced in the world rankings to 16th place, thanks to the results achieved in recent tournaments. He thanked all the supporters of the QVA, led by the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) under its President H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, who has been supporting Qatari volleyball.
QVA Secretary General Youssef Ahmed Kanoo also praised the team’s achievement adding that it reflects the team’s development is continuous.
