Doha, Qatar: Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al-Attiyah, congratulated H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani on his election as President of the Olympic Council of Asia.

She affirmed that the confidence placed in His Excellency by the Asian Olympic committees reflects Qatar’s continued success in supporting sport as a key pillar of development, noting that Qatar’s experience is pioneering in promoting sport and encouraging society to engage in athletic activities.

Al-Attiyah expressed her wishes for the Qatari sports system to continue its sustained achievements, emphasising that these efforts closely intersect with human rights.

She highlighted that sport is not only a human right in itself, but has also become one of the most prominent tools for raising awareness of various human rights, as clearly demonstrated in sporting arenas around the world.

Al-Attiyah stated that Qatar places great importance on human development and on safeguarding human health, which are among the noble Islamic and humanitarian objectives.

She noted that this commitment has contributed to the widespread practice of various sports across the country, compared to the situation just a few years ago. Al-Attiyah added that Qatar has been keen to provide suitable facilities for practicing sports in different areas, thereby achieving tangible progress in the field of human rights.

She explained that sport has a direct impact on both physical and mental health, and that this, in turn, directly supports the advancement of human rights in the country.

Al-Attiyah praised the multiple forms of cooperation between the National Human Rights Committee and sports federations in the State, noting that this reflects the relevant entities’ commitment to supporting the human rights journey and their belief that human rights and sport are inseparable, with sports institutions playing a key role in awareness-raising efforts.
