VADODARA--Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has restored the dignity of the chair and strengthened the system that was getting weaker day by day.

Talking to reporters during his second trip to Karnali village in Vadodara’s Dabhoi taluka, Jaitley said, “In the last one year, (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) has written a new history for the country. He influences the governments, citizens and NRIs residing in countries he visits in such a way that it not only raises his stature but the stature of India among the world community. He has brought back the dignity of the position of the Prime Minister and has tried to strengthen the system that was getting weaker day by day (during the previous UPA rule).”

“Our government is dedicated to the poor of the country. Distributing money in the name of election is not a service to the poor,” he said, taking a jibe at the UPA government.

“Our effort is to set up a system in which a poor could stand on his own feet and be strong enough to take care of himself,” he said, highlighting measures such as opening of bank accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana for 15.5 crore poor citizens, which include the residents of the Karnali group panchayat.

He also talked about the accident and life insurance policies that his government launched in the last one year.
