Doha: The European Council has agreed to accept the State of Qatar as an observer member of the Council in order to benefit from the expertise and exchange of security information on stadium rioters and to create partnerships to benefit from during 2022 World Cup and other events.
Brigadier Ibrahim Khalil Al Muhannadi, Representative of the State of Qatar to the European Council, will sign the agreement on the accession of the State of Qatar to the Council today in Strasbourg, in the presence of Gabriela Pattani, Deputy Secretary General of the European Council.
Al Muhannadi highlighted yesterday the importance of Qatar’s membership in the Council consisting of 48 members and managed through a Council of Foreign Ministers of member states and based in the French city of Strasbourg. Qatar is the first non-European country outside the European Union to join this Council, he said.
Al Muhannadi pointed out that Qatar has applied to join the European Council for Security and Integrity Council. The agreement is supervised by a permanent committee to monitor its implementation and its function is to ensure that the member states of the European Union accede to all its provisions.
Al Muhannadi said that Qatar will become an active member of the European Council like other members within two years enough before beginning of the World Cup 2022. The joining of Qatar to the Council received warm welcome by member countries since Qatar enjoyed good reputation in all fields on international level.
