The Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H E Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani with Egypt’s President Mohammed Mursi at the Egyptian presidency headquarters in Cairo yesterday. During the meeting, the leaders reviewed bilateral relations and ways to boost them.
DOHA: Egypt is negotiating with Qatar to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) to help meet its growing requirements for the clean fuel, especially to fire its power plants. And Qatar and Egypt have agreed to further economic ties and accelerate the process of investments.
Studies are under way to launch the ambitious tourism project on the Mediterranean coast in East Port Said in which Qataris are investing a staggering $18bn.
This was disclosed yesterday by Egyptian Prime Minister Dr Hisham Qandeel at a news conference in Cairo held following the meeting of the Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani with Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi.
Qandeel told reporters that issues like the situation in Syria, Palestine and the Arab world also came up for discussions between the two leaders, aside from issues of mutual concern.
The Egyptian premier described the visit of the Emir to Gaza as historic and said that as the Emir already noted in his speech in Gaza on Tuesday, post-revolution Egypt played a role in facilitating his visit to the Palestinian territory.
According to Qandeel, issues related to plots of land owned by Qataris in Egypt also came up for discussion between the Emir and President Mursi.
Decisions on some key issues were taken in the meeting and they included an agreement to remove all obstacles in the way of routing Qatari investments into Egypt. It was also decided at the meeting to start working on the Qatari tourism development project in East Port Said, the Egyptian premier disclosed. “We are conducting the necessary studies to launch the above projects,” the premier said.
