Senegal: The Karim Wade affair

dakar, Senegal--The son of Senegal's ex-president, Karim Wade, was on Monday ordered jailed for six years for corruption, days after saying he planned to stand as president.
A snapshot of developments in the scandal:
- 2012: President Macky Sall elected -
On March 25, former prime minister Macky Sall wins the second round of the presidential election against incumbent Abdoulaye Wade, after a coalition of civil society and political parties had mobilised to prevent Wade from being eligible for a third term.
Senegal's new government reopens a special court to look into fraud and ill-gotten gains.
- 2012: Karim Wade in the spotlight -
On July 3 the ex-president's son Karim, who had become a flamboyant "super minister" under his father, is questioned by police on suspicion of corruption.
- 2013: Karim Wade charged -
On April 17, Karim Wade is remanded in custody on corruption charges, after accumulating a fortune valued at well over $1 billion.
He is accused of having acquired by corrupt means companies and real estate, including land in Dakar, a fleet of luxury cars and media and finance companies operating across Africa.
- 2014: The trial -
On April 25, Abdoulaye Wade returns to his country which he left after his defeat in 2012 to support his son.
On July 31, Karim Wade appears before a special court in Dakar, where he presents himself as a "political prisoner" on the first day of his trial.
In September, Karim Wade accuses Sall of having him prosecuted to prevent him from standing in the next presidential election.
On November 11, the prosecutur of the special court, Alioune Ndao is fired and replaced by Cheikh Tidiana Mara.
- 2015: The sentence
On February 4, Abdoulaye Wade tells thousands of opposition supporters he is prepared to "give his life" to prevent his son being convicted of corruption charges.
On March 21, Karim Wade is chosen to be the former ruling party's - the Democratic Party of Senegal - candidate in the next presidential election.
On March 23, Wade is ordered jailed for six years for corruption
