Doha: The Qatar Stars League (QSL), will become the first professional football league in the world to donate all ticket revenue to aid the displaced Syrian refugees, it was announced here yesterday.
Hassan Al Kuwari, QSL Director of Events, announced that from Round 4 onwards, all ticket revenue for the entire season will be donated to Syrian refugees in conjunction with Qatar Charity.
“QSL would celebrate the coming Eid Al Adha with free entry into all Round 3 matches. For every person attending a match, the QSL would donate 10 Qatari Riyals to the displaced Syrian refugees,” Al Kuwari said.
Al Kuwari changes to the schedule would allow fans to see more matches with the proposed double header system in place.
Meanwhile, the League’s organisers yesterday announced amendments to the QSL fixture calendar for the first half of the season.
Hamad Al Mannai, Competition Consultant at QFA in his welcome explained the new changes to the QSL fixtures calendar.
Ahmed Al Harmi, QSL Executive Director of Competitions & Football Development, did not rule further changes to the schedule.
“After careful consideration we arrived at our final decision which we are announcing today. However, that doesn’t mean that it will not be amended further if needs be. We will start the implementation of the double-header system this season; this means we will have two matches at one stadium, one straight after the other. This is due to a very busy sports calendar this year.”
“The matches for Round 3 will take place on October 26 and 27. We have also scheduled some games so as to help our National and Olympic teams as much as possible. So, for example the Al Sadd Vs Al Ahli match will take place first during Round 3. This will give players more time to recover and be ready for national matches.”
“Round 8 coincides with the preparation camp of the National Team and Round 15 will see the Olympic Team in action. So during these weeks, the clubs should be aware that they will not have as many players to choose from. Also, the postponed game between Lekhwiya and Gharafa will be played on October 27 after Round 6.”
“We have also been careful to consider the prayer times so that we can accommodate this important factor too as our priority is the players and referees.”
Ahmed Al Abbassi Operations Director, National Team Department was also present for the press conference.
QSL has 14 teams competing for the top honours. Lekhwiya won the title last year.
