‘Amir’s participation in UNGA shows Qatar’s commitment to prosperous future’

New York: President of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Dennis Francis has underlined the keenness of the Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to participate every year in the periodic meetings of the UNGA.

In remarks to QNA, Francis stressed that the Amir’s participation reflects his commitment and that of the government and people of Qatar, not only to the UN and multilateralism, but also to the future of humanity.

Regarding the contribution of the strategic partnership between Qatar and the UN in facing global challenges, Francis said Qatar has joined the UN efforts to effectively address many of the problems in the international community today. He pointed out that Qatar’s role has been manifested very clearly in the issue of education, especially the education of children, women and girls who should not be deprived of their rights to education.

Qatar is a major supporter of the Office of the President of the UNGA and it continues to play a major role in the negotiations related to the drafting of the political declaration for the Sustainable Development Goals Summit, he said. He noted the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations, H E Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani had co-chaired the 4th session of government negotiations on the political declaration of the summit, at the UN headquarters, along with the Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations, Fergal Mithen.

Referring to the partnership between Qatar and the UN Francis pointed out that Qatar hosts many offices of the UN. He added that Qatar enjoys a good reputation at the UN, based on its view of the world and its constant willingness to participate in cooperation and support UN activities.

Regarding the 78th session of the UNGA and the goals that have been set to work on, he stressed that the main issue of the current session lies in addressing the sustainable development goals and making significant progress, with a view to achieving them by 2030.

He considered that achieving these goals requires addressing problems such as poverty, hunger, education, and health, and helping people worldwide to have full access to quality health care.
