Doha, Qatar: Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to boosting family medicine as a cornerstone of community health, ahead of Qatar Family Day 2026.

The annual occasion observed on April 15 reflects the country's growing focus on the family as the foundation of a stable and cohesive society, with health authorities emphasizing its central role in promoting wellbeing.

Dr Fathiya Mohammed Al Meer, Senior Consultant in Family Medicine and Director of PHCC's Central Region, described the event as an opportunity to engage directly with the public and promote preventive healthcare.

She said strong and cohesive families are essential to a healthy society, adding that care extends beyond treatment to include prevention, awareness, and psychological and social support.

Family doctors, she noted, play a pivotal role in the healthcare system, equipped to manage a wide range of physical, mental and behavioral conditions. They are also key to early disease detection, chronic illness management, and coordinating care with specialists.

Dr Al Meer highlighted the unique, trust-based relationship between family physicians and patients, which allows for continuity of care and a comprehensive understanding of patients' medical and family histories-factors that contribute to improved health outcomes.

PHCC provides family medicine services across all its health centers throughout the week, offering consultations, routine follow-ups, and preventive programs. Patients can also access support through the Hayyak customer service platform or by calling the national hotline.

Services include treatment for common conditions such as respiratory, digestive, urinary and skin diseases, as well as minor surgical procedures. The program also supports the management of chronic illnesses including diabetes and hypertension, alongside maternal care and family planning guidance.

Child health services, including growth monitoring and vaccinations, are also provided, in addition to smoking cessation programs aimed at improving public health.

To mark Qatar Family Day, health centers across the country are organizing awareness and community events to highlight the importance of family wellbeing and the role of family physicians as the first line of defense in addressing health challenges, particularly during times of crisis.
