DOHA: The Supreme Council of Health (SCH) has banned the sale and advertisement of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) due to potential health hazards.

The ban has been imposed by the Pharmacy and Drug Control Department at SCH under guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO), Al Sharq reported yesterday.

Electronic cigarette is an electrical inhaler, simulating the act of tobacco smoking. It is often marketed as a smoking cessation aid or tobacco replacement.

Those violating the ban will face legal action, the SCH has warned. The Department has also asked the pharmacies not to not sell Isotretinoin medicine of different brands without medical prescription by an authorised doctor in Qatar.

The medicine has side effects on embryo (baby in labor) and the pharmacist should explain the warnings of the medicine to consumers specially the pregnant women. And original copy of the medical prescription should be kept for a record, said the department.

Isotretinoin belongs to a group of medicines known as retinoids and is a substance related to vitamin A. It is available to take by mouth and as a topical skin treatment, said a report posted on a medical website. Isotretinoin can damage an unborn baby or cause a miscarriage.  The Peninsula
