DOHA: New data released by the UK’s Higher Education Statistics Agency shows that the number of students from Qatar studying in the UK went up 13% for the 2016-17 academic year to over 3,000 students.

The British Council plays a key role in connecting students in Qatar with information about studying in the UK and this year, it is hosting its annual ‘Study in the UK’ exhibition on March 11 and 12 at La Cigale Hotel, under the theme ‘Experience Life – Changing Learning”.

The event will connect students in Qatar with representatives from 19 visiting UK Universities, Colleges and English language providers who can answer their questions about UK education.

During the two-day event, students in Qatar will have the opportunity to find out all they need to know about foundation courses, English Language courses, career-based diplomas, first degree and postgraduate degree courses. Parents and students can speak directly to representatives from 19 well-known UK institutions.

The exhibition opening ceremony that took place on Sunday 11th March at La Cigale hotel was attended by Ajay Sharma, British Ambassador to Qatar, Dr Frank Fitzpatrick, Director of British Council in Qatar, official delegates from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs, UK institutions and around 50 representatives from local scholarship providers and school counsellors in Qatar.

Ajay Sharma said: “British educational institutions remain the best in the world and students who graduate from the UK are equipped with highly sought-after skills,   which are immediately applicable in the global workplace. The experience of studying in the UK is also, I believe, second to none. I would encourage young people thinking seriously about their futures to visit the British Council’s ‘Study in the UK’ Exhibition this month to see the exciting educational opportunities the UK has to offer.”

Dr Frank Fitzpatrick, Director of British Council in Qatar, said that: “I am proud to see that the UK continues to be the most popular destination by Qataris for overseas studies.  There are many reasons why students in Qatar and across the globe consider studying in the UK. The first is that UK qualifications provide an internationally recognised boost to salaries and work experience.  The UK is also the top destination worldwide for English language study and a welcoming country offering unique opportunities to discover the country’s culture and cities.”

The two-day exhibition started yesterday at Le Crillon Ballroom at La Cigale Hotel Doha. Students not able to attend can consult the new Study UK website for information about living and studying in the UK: https://study-uk.britishcouncil.org/.

Admission to the event is free, but online registration is recommended in order to gain faster access and to enter a prize draw for a chance to win prizes and gift vouchers!  https://qa.edukexhibition.org
