Doha, Qatar The Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships 2026 is currently underway in Tashkent yesterday and will run until August 14, with more than 300 weightlifters from 29 countries taking part.
The opening ceremony at the Olympic City of Tashkent was attended by officials, sports figures and representatives of national and international federations. Mohammed Yousef Al Mana, First Vice President of the Qatar Olympic Committee and President of the Qatar, Arab, Asian and Afro-Asian Weightlifting Federations, stressed the importance of youth and junior championships in developing future champions and providing young athletes with valuable international experience.
Earlier, Al Mana also chaired the Asian Weightlifting Federation Executive Office meeting at the Uzbek Ministry of Sports. It was attended by members of the executive office and leaders of the sports movement in Uzbekistan, headed by Uzbek Minister of Sports H E Adham Ikramov and Oybek Kasimov, Secretary General of the Uzbek National Olympic Committee.
The meeting discussed the future of the sport, upcoming competitions and preparations for the 2027 Asian Champi onships in South Korea, which will form part of the qualification process for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
On the sidelines, Uzbek Minister of Sports H E Adham Ikramov awarded Al Mana the Ministry’s honorary medal, “Excellence in Physical Culture and Sports”, in recognition of his contribution to the development of weightlifting in Asia.
