DOHA: Sebastian Soria scored twice to help Lekhwiya maintain their winning streak by crushing Umm Salal 3-1 in the Qatar Stars League (QSL) yesterday.
The win was Lekhwiya’s sixth on the trot and consequently reduced the gap on points leaders Al Sadd who play their match against Al Khairaitiyat today.
The loss for Umm Salal means they are 11th with five points.
Elsewhere, Diego Tardelli bagged a hat-trick to inspire Al Gharafa to a 3-0 win over Al Sailiyah. Al Gharafa has 12 points in the standings.
The result meant it was the first win for coach Habib Sadiq.
In another QSL match yesterday, Adriano scored the only goal of the match to give Eljaish a 1-0 away win against Qatar SC.
Qatar SC, coached by Sebastio Lazaroni, now has 14 points, and sit in fifth place.
Eljaish are two points ahead in fourth place.
Lekhwiya, who were without their coach Eric Gerets due to illness, took the lead in the 23rd minute, courtesy of a wonderful long-range goal from Ali Afif.
The midfielder turned away from his marker and struck a swerving shot with his left foot that beat Umm Salal goalkeeper Emam Al Shammari.
Geret’s side made it 2-0 before the half-time whistle, when Soria converted a penalty, sending Al Shammari the wrong way, after Khalid Jaberti had fouled a Lekhwiya player.
Umm Salal players were not happy with the referee’s decision which resulted in a short delay in the match.
The Qatari striker was on the scoresheet again in the 67th minute with an exquisite finish.
Timing his run to perfection, Soria received Khalid Mufath’s clever pass to lift the ball over Al Shammari with his right foot.
Umm Salal pulled one back through Caboure’s effort in the 83rd minute.
However Umm Salal players could not add to Caboure’s goal in their 10th round match.
Elsewhere, Al Gharafa opened proceedings in the early kick-off when Tardelli received a pass from his-team and hit his shot from outside the penalty box and into the back of the net.
Five minutes later, the Brazilian, who joined the club in January this year grabbed his second of the game, with a well-taken penalty.
Tardelli grabbed his hat-trick and his team’s third in the 53rd minute, after receiving a long pass and slotting the ball past the goalkeeper. THE PENINSULA
