Qatari skeet shooter Reem Al Sharshani (pictured) is hoping to carry forward her impressive form at the recently concluded CISM Military World Games into the 14th Asian Shooting Championship which begins today at the Losail Shooting Range.
The 24-year-old, who finished fifth at the Military Games in China, notched a new personal record of shooting down 118 targets and qualified for the final rounds.
“The pressure is on. This is the last event to get the Olympic quota. Shooting at home has its challenges,” said Al Sharshani, who hails from a sporting family.
Al Sharshani family boasts of some dedicated athletes. Her father is a former swimmer and jockey, her brother is a competitive drag racer.
Reem’s sister, Yasmian Al Sharshani has the distinction of being the first woman in the Qatar National Golf Team and is a pioneer of the game in the Middle East. She began her tryst with golf at the age of 11. Yasmian is also into Taekwondo and recently won a medal at an event in Kuwait.
Reem too has tried her hand at Judo and Taekwondo before settling for shooting.
Qatar skeet coach Vladzimir Karavinski, under whom Reem trains, was upbeat ahead of the event.
“She did very well at the Military Games. She is working very hard in training and hopefully she will get the quota and she will qualify for the Tokyo Olympics,” said Karavinski, after a training session.
The skeet shooter has been a regular member of the Qatar shooting team and had taken part in many international events this year.
In April, she took part in the Grand Prix of Bulgaria and finished in fourth place, while in August 2019, she also took part in the ISSF World Cup Shotgun in Finland.
