Doha: Carrefour Qatar yesterday announced the continuation of its pledge for a plastic-free future by extending its sustainability efforts across its operations, on the occasion of International Plastic Bag Free Day. This builds on the leading retailer’s 16-year sustainability journey.
As early as 2007, Carrefour was the first retailer in the MENA region to introduce reusable shopping bags. Soon after, the retailer co-branded reusable bags with Unicef, encouraging customers to adopt sustainable modes of shopping while donating to a good cause.
In 2019, Carrefour pledged to phase out single-use plastics by 2025. Most recently, Carrefour Qatar successfully phased out single-use plastic cutlery in 2022.
“Sustainability has been deeply ingrained in our company’s vision for decades. Our past achievements stand as a testament to our unwavering commitment to driving positive impact and change. As we move forward, and by setting high standards for our operations, forging meaningful partnerships, and engaging with our communities, we are confident that we can continue striving for even greater milestones and creating a more sustainable and responsible business for the benefit of our planet and future generations,” commented Laurent Hausknecht, Carrefour’s Regional Director.
Carrefour Qatar is committed to making a meaningful difference for surrounding communities with regards to reducing plastic pollution. On the International Plastic Bag Free Day, Carrefour Qatar stores will witness a no single-use plastic bag day to encourage its customers to live more sustainably.
Looking back at past milestones, Carrefour Qatar will continue setting high standards for a sustainable, responsible and self-sufficient business across its expanding footprint in Qatar.
