New Year brings sport frenzy

With its organisational excellence, Qatar is gearing up for another phenomenal year to strengthen its status as the hub of sports in the world. The New Year, which will start with major competitions being hosted in Qatar, will set the pace for another eventful 2024 for sports top destination.

Football fans of the continent will be in for a treat soon after the start of the New Year with Qatar hosting 24 premier nations of the continent at the AFC Asian Cup starting from January 12. The month-long fiesta taking place at nine venues is expected to bring back the memories of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 when the country came into the global spotlight.

Enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the Opening Ceremony at the iconic Lusail Stadium which will be followed by Qatar’s first match against Group A opponents Lebanon. Al Annabi after their historic title triumph at the 2019 Asian Cup in UAE are determined to defend their title successfully. They are hoping to make their fans happy after a disappointing World Cup performance at home. Four-time winners Japan are among the pre-tournaments along with former winners South Korea, Iran and Saudi Arabia with a total of 51 matches to be played across the tournament.

While the Asian Cup will be in the quarter-final stage, Qatar will make history by becoming the first country in the Middle East to host the World Aquatics Championships, which will be held from February 2 to 18. Doha will be home to elite swimmers from all around the world who will feature in the event with an eye on Paris Olympics.

The World Aquatics Championships – Doha 2024 is set to include 75 medal events in six Aquatic sports: swimming, artistic swimming, open water swimming, diving, high diving, and water polo across three venues in Doha. The global event will get underway with a gripping Opening Ceremony that will feature a variety of programmes, including segments celebrating Qatar’s ancient marine history and a parade showcasing the cultural richness and diversity of the participating countries, embodying the spirit of unity and cultural exchange. The championships will be followed by World Aquatics Masters Championships.

The New Year will also bring thrill for the equestrian fans as the prestigious Doha International Equestrian Tour will make a return to state-of-the-art Al Shaqab after a gap of six years. The popular event will bring together the world’s best showjumpers at Al Shaqab’s Longines Outdoor Arena with the event featuring four legs starting from January 11, signaling an exciting year that will witness many showjumping and horse racing competitions.
