The Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership is the first-of-its-kind since security concerns amid successive wars and internal turmoil deprived the country from hosting such an event over the past few decades.

The Republic of Iraq, despite being an important regional state with historical pivotal role in the region, has suffered for decades from complex political crises, and fierce wars that claimed lives of hundreds of thousands and displaced millions.

But thanks to the people of Iraq, deep-rooted political legacy of the country, and its enormous potentials in various fields, Iraq is rising again to play its historical role at regional and international levels.

Yesterday’s Baghdad summit brought together leaders who have not met for quite some time giving indication that the country is restoring its role as pivotal player in the region and this, in itself, is one of the successes that can be counted for this conference.

Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met on the sidelines of the summit with Their Majesties, Excellencies, and Highnesses leaders of countries and heads of state of brotherly and friendly countries, including Vice-President, Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, and Ruler of Dubai H H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum; President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, H E Abdel Fattah Al Sisi; King of Jordan and President of France.

In his address at the conference, H H called for addressing the root causes that made this region embrace hotspots of tension that pose threat to the peace and security of the region and the globe.

The State of Qatar believes that Iraq is qualified to play an active role in establishing security and peace in the region, said the Amir expressing his readiness to support Iraq to restore its role and the status it deserves on both regional and international levels.

“We emphasize that we will continue our support for the brotherly people of Iraq, and to assist them in achieving their aspirations in peace, security and development”.

H H the Amir called on the international community to provide the necessary support to Iraq to rebuild its civil and military institutions, reiterating that the State of Qatar will spare no effort to stand by the brotherly Iraq and its people to achieve the desired security, stability and development.

The State of Qatar also believes that Iraq can be one of the pillars of stability in the region with the support of neighbouring countries and international community to put end to turning the country "into an arena for international conflicts” as stated by Iraq’s Prime Minister H E Mustafa Al Kadhimi in his opening speech.
