The Republic of Peru celebrated its 200th independence anniversary yesterday. The South American country and Qatar have enjoyed a seamless bilateral relation spanning the economy, trade, investment, education, and sport.

Diplomatic relations between Qatar and Peru were established in 1989. The Embassy of Peru in Doha was inaugurated in 2011, while Qatar inaugurated its Embassy in the Peruvian capital Lima in 2012.

Further boosting the partnership between both countries, the Qatari-Peruvian Parliamentary Friendship Society was established in 2013. The society’s goal is to strengthen Qatar and Peru’s diplomatic roles and enhance the friendly relations between the two countries.

The visit of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to Peru in October 2018, received by then President, Martín Alberto Vizcarra, boosted the already strong bilateral ties with the signing of various agreements and memorandums of understanding that enhanced the close relationship between the countries. Earlier, the Amir hosted former president Ollanta Humala in Doha.

Recently, Qatar has provided aid to Peru in the wake of the coronavirus. The Qatar Red Crescent Society, in partnership with the Peruvian Red Cross, disinfectants and sanitisers were distributed, and health education sessions were held to raise community awareness about how to prevent infection. A total of 3,000 people benefited from the project in three vulnerable communities in San Juan de Lurigancho District, Lima.

Also, the Embassy of Qatar in Peru delivered Qatar Charity’s (QC) medical aid to Peru to support the country’s efforts to confront the pandemic at a formal ceremony in Lima. Peruvian authorities thanked Qatar, hailing the valuable support that allowed front-line workers to confront the pandemic.

In 2020, the Ambassador of the Republic of Peru to the State of Qatar H E Jose Benzaquen Perea, affirmed that Qatar and Peru were working towards signing several agreements to boost investment opportunities in Peru in energy, agriculture, mining, tourism, and others.

There are hundreds of Peruvian citizens in Qatar. The majority of them work as professionals and pilots in Qatar Airways, others in Qatar Petroleum, and hotel management.

Qatar and Peru’s relationship is based on the rule of law, with mutual respect in policies based on cooperation, political dialogue, promotion of trade and investments, the importance of human rights, the fight against poverty, terrorism, environmental conservation, education, and health.

Recently, the Peruvian Ambassador to Qatar hailed the great role that Qatar is playing as a significant mediator in bringing peace and equal fundamental rights for men and women and its generosity towards helping many nations.
