The recent decisions by the United States and the European Union to lift sanctions on Syria mark a pivotal moment in the country’s journey toward recovery and stability. This policy shift, welcomed by the Syrian interim government and the whole region, reflects a collective recognition of the necessity to support Syria’s reconstruction efforts.

Qatar has consistently maintained that a stable and prosperous Syria is essential for regional peace. It has welcomed the move and stands by the Syrian people in their endeavours to rebuild their country. Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani was the first head of state to visit Syria since the new administration took over in Damascus.

The ease of sanctions will help facilitate global engagement with Syria’s new authorities and help foreign investment flow to Syria again.

Qatar has long been at the forefront of humanitarian assistance to Syria. Its humanitarian interventions include delivery of food, medical supplies, winter clothing, and shelter to hundreds of thousands affected by the conflict and natural disasters.

Qatar and Saudi Arabia have also announced their commitment to settle approximately $15m in Syrian arrears to the World Bank. Furthermore, Qatar is also providing natural gas to Syria to help generate electricity.

Qatar’s proactive stance aligns with its broader regional policy, emphasising the importance of lifting sanctions to facilitate Syria’s recovery. Qatar has advocated the end to sanctions on Syria, recognising the detrimental impact of sanctions on the Syrian populace and the necessity for international support to rebuild the nation.

The lifting of sanctions aligns perfectly with Qatar’s long-standing commitment to supporting the Syrian people and facilitating their journey towards stability and prosperity.

These steps will also unlock much-needed investments in vital sectors such as infrastructure, health, education, and housing, paving the way for millions of displaced Syrians to return home with dignity.

As the international community rallies to support Syria’s reconstruction, Qatar remains steadfast in its dedication to humanitarian aid and regional stability. The lifting of sanctions presents an opportunity for a renewed partnership, with Qatar poised to contribute significantly to Syria’s journey toward peace and prosperity.
