Qatar has been a hive of international diplomacy recently, with several international leaders and diplomats flocking to the country from every part of the world, praising the constructive role played by Qatar in peacemaking and avoiding conflicts and humanitarian disasters. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani reiterated on Tuesday that Qatar’s foreign policy is distinguished by its cooperative efforts and its pursuit of constructive dialogue over conflict and war, principles which illustrate Qatar as a fair mediator, a reliable partner and a prominent figure in the pursuit of peace and fight against terrorism. He added that Qatar would continue striving towards the attainment of international peace, coexistence and the protection of human rights and dignities, elements that are highly prioritised within the country’s foreign policy.
Qatar’s policy is based on the principles outlined in the country’s Constitution, which include strengthening international peace and security by encouraging the peaceful resolution of international disputes. It is a policy which respects and honours all international treaties and conventions to which the country is a party. The priorities in foreign policy include mediating disputes between conflicting parties to achieve peaceful resolutions, promoting sustainable development, eradicating discrimination against women and religious minorities, enhancing humanitarian assistance in regions of conflict and war, supporting and strengthening efforts to reduce anticipated humanitarian needs in complex emergencies etc.
Building alliances and finding solutions to conflicts through constructive dialogue and mediation, while respecting the rights of sovereign nations is at the core of the policy. The country has always proved its commitment to renouncing force and coercion and it upholds the need for peaceful settlement of disputes through mediation, always pursuing diplomacy.
Latest example of its major success stories in mediation efforts is the breakthrough agreement reached between the Taliban and United States, after protracted peace talks between the warring parties hosted and mediated by Doha. Providing humanitarian assistance is in the DNA of Qatar. The country is committed to helping people affected by crisis situations such as wars, earthquakes, floods and other natural disasters while keeping up the principles of impartiality and neutrality.
