Qatar leads from front

It is the common people who end up facing the brunt of all the wars and man-made disasters around the world. This has been especially true for the Middle East region where millions have become homeless, jobless and a huge number of children are out of their classrooms due to some obstinate decisions by some governments or leaders.

It is not easy to alleviate the suffering of all these millions by mere lip service as they need to rebuild their lives, homes, schools and community which were destroyed by the relentless attack using most dangerous weapons.

Qatar has always led from the front when it comes to offering tangible help and assistance to the needy through various channels of international bodies.

The latest among these efforts were seen when Doha pledged a fresh infusion of funds in continuation of its existing commitment to alleviate the Syrian humanitarian disaster.

This was announced by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani at the second Brussels Conference on “Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region”.

“As part of Qatar’s pledge to support the oppressed people of Syria, Doha continues to commit itself to alleviating the impact of the Syrian humanitarian disaster,” the Minister said as he announced the new pledge of $100m for 2018.

As part of Qatar’s strategy of building peace and stability through education, 50 percent of the grant will be allocated to educate Syrian students inside and outside Syria.

The previous Brussels conference saw Qatar pledge $100m, which was fulfilled and even increased to $108m, while the state’s contribution to the London 2016 conference amounted to $101.241m.

Qatar has always generously opened its purse when it comes to helping the displaced people or the out-of-school children around the world.

Earlier this month, Qatar had announced $500m in the form of concessionary loan and investments in support of Lebanon during the Cedar Conference in Paris to support the process of economic development in Lebanon.

This was not the first time Qatar has come to the aid of Lebanon. Doha had contributed to the rebuilding of entire villages following the Israeli aggression on Lebanon in 2006.

Qatar has also contributed a lot to the redevelopment of Gaza and Hamad City, which houses thou-sands of people, is a very fine example of this benevolence.

Standing with the displaced and oppressed and giving them a helping hand is something any nation with a conscience should do and Qatar is at the forefront of it. It is proud moment for all the residents and citizens of the country.
