QU, torch bearer of education

In the past years, Qatar has made commendable achievements in the field of education and research. The country’s educational institutions have been regularly featured in the top rungs of several global rankings awarded in the field of education, and Qatar University, the torch bearer of the country’s higher education, was a regular feature on these rankings. Every educational institution in the country has been on a gradual growth trajectory, continuously embracing the latest innovations and attracting the brightest academics from across the world.

Recently, Qatar University (QU) President Dr. Hassan Rashid Al Derham disclosed some of the future plans of the university during session with the Shura Council. The President said that QU plans to develop technical research at the university, including establishing the Qatar University technical company, a project which had reached advanced stages in cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Dr. Al Derham also talked about the university’s ambitious plans to branch out to Asian and African countries, adding that the QU is working on a university endowment project to enhance its financial sustainability.

As the sole national higher education centre, QU has been keen on meeting employment needs of the country and tailored its course diversity accordingly. Imparting education in Arabic and English languages, it has attracted the brightest young minds in the country and the region, several of whom are serving the country in an exemplary manner in every walk of diverse government and private establishments. QU ensures that the research and scientific studies are linked to Qatar’s strategic development plans and needs for qualified cadres.

At the same time, the university pays attention to the identity, traditions and customs of the Qatari society, Arab culture and Islamic values. QU has exerted special efforts in attracting Qataris to work as teaching staff.

Established in 1977, QU is committed to providing high-quality education in areas of national priority and has become a beacon of academic and research excellence in the region and the world. The university has been regularly bettering its positions in prestigious global rankings such as the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. 

Qatar University hosts some 10 colleges offering arts and sciences, Business, education, engineering, health sciences, law, medicine, pharmacy, Shariah and Islamic studies courses. It offers 47 Bachelors, 29 Masters, 20 PhD programmes, nine Diplomas and a Doctor of Pharmacy. It has a student body of over 23,000, which ensures the country’s brightest future leaders, scholars and teachers. Qatar University has become a mirror reflecting the brilliant future crop of academicians, leaders and scholars of Qatar, who are being trained to lead the country to the highest echelons of education, research and excellence.
