Along other state entities, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) is contributing significantly to promote sustainability in the country through dozens of initiatives taken in recent years.
Kahramaa, under the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency ‘Tarsheed’ initiative, is empowering Qatari residents through awareness, encouragement and practical lifestyle suggestions to reduce their daily consumption of water and electricity for many years.
Kahramaa has announced the successful completion of a groundbreaking initiative to convert the central cooling stations at Qatar Foundation (QF), boasting a cooling capacity of 152,000 tonnes, into an energy-efficient system powered by treated water. The cooling system in QF’s Educational City is considered the most energy-efficient. This transformation enhances sustainability by contributing to the protection of natural resources, reducing electricity consumption, and lowering the country’s carbon footprint.
The cooling capacity of these main stations exceeds 152,000 tonnes, which are equipped with the latest devices, smart control and monitoring systems, and high-energy efficiency, linked to a control system with power centres in the Education City, providing greater flexibility in operation and control.
Earlier this year, Kahramaa, represented by the National Programme for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), had signed a memorandum of cooperation and understanding with Qatar Foundation’s (QF) Earthna Centre.
The memorandum aims to work on developing public policies related to electricity and water sustainability and energy efficiency in Qatar. It deals with 10 main items to develop innovative research and development projects related to energy efficiency and ways to reduce the consumption of electricity and water resources while bringing down harmful carbon emissions.
Meanwhile, in a bid to enhance renewable energy transition for sustainability, solar power is expected to reach 30 percent of the total electricity production of Qatar by 2030 due to Kahramaa efforts.
There are future projects with partners like QatarEnergy to produce more solar energy. “We are studying to increase the percentage to achieve Qatar National Vision 2030 which is equivalent to 30 percent of the total production of electricity in the country,” said an official of Kahramaa earlier.
To promote sustainable transportation to cut carbon emissions, Kahramaa is also expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging network to all Woqod fuel stations in the country. Under an agreement between Kahramaa and Woqod, DC fast charging stations will be installed at all Woqod stations operating across the country within two years.
