Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani will address today the opening session of the 73rd meeting of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 73).
Qatar, with decades-old strong cooperation with the United Nations and its agencies, is keen and committed to the UN principles and Charter of the United Nations and the rules of international law. Qatar’s participation in this event comes as part of its keenness to partake in all international events and meetings at all levels, aiming at discussing and exchanging views on key issues on the regional and international arenas.
On top of these is Qatar’s firm stance towards the Arab, Islamic and international issues including the just cause of Palestine and the ongoing conflicts in Yemen, Libya and Syria and ways of settling the conflicts that the world is facing.
This is the second time that H H the Amir is speaking at this global assembly conveying an honorable and shining image of the State of Qatar and its relations with various countries at the time when the country has managed to overcome effects of unjust siege imposed by sister countries and their malicious campaign of fabrications and false accusations that no country in the world believes.
No doubt that H H the Amir will take advantage of the meeting “to reaffirm all the peaceful and human values and principles that our country believes in and pursues aimed to achieve peace, security, stability and development all over the globe”.
Qatar has proved its firm position against all forms of extremism and terrorism by establishing strategic partnership with the UN to fight terrorism through provision of full support to military operations against ISIS, combating terror-financing, exchanging and assessing information, enhancing regional and international cooperation in the field of fight against terror.
Qatar has also built partnership with UN and international organizations through the support Qatar provides to leading initiatives of these organizations in the fields of development and humanitarian projects.
For instance in 2017, Qatar was the first and major supporter in the Arab world for refugees programs of the UNHCR, UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and the UNDP. Qatar Development Fund (QDF) seeks through the five-year plan (2016-2020) to increase donation to the UN organizations by over 20 percent of overall government supports granted through the fund.
From 2013 until June 2018, the total Qatari support to the UN organizations has amounted to $408.4m out of which some $306m have been used.
UNGA session is one of the significant platforms from where the world leaders share views and discuss means of maintaining regional and international peace and security, human rights and development issues in the world which are always a priority in the foreign policy of the State of Qatar.
