Thriving art landscape in Qatar

The art landscape in Qatar is pulsating with life yet again. No visitor, who has been in Qatar, has returned to his hometown unimpressed by Qatar’s thriving art scene. With the recent announcement by Qatar Museums (QM) of 17 artists creating art pieces in different designated locations this month through its Jedariart initiative, Qatar’s public art scene is sure to get a further boost.

The Jedariart initiative is part of an ongoing campaign by QM to activate shared urban areas in Doha and add meaning to the city’s walls through carefully curated murals and street art. The Jedariart, held in partnership with the Supreme Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places, QRail, Woqod, and the Fire Station, aims to support artists to make their individual artistic mark at several locations.

Public art is one of the important components of the large-scale second and third packages of Doha Central Development and Beautification Projects as recently announced by Ashghal. Public art has never been a more important element of art landscape, assuming a significant role in sparking debate and provoking critical thinking beyond the walls of art galleries.

Qatar Museums said the artworks will provide a tangible sense of space for the community, and by serving as a new touristic attraction, increase foot traffic through neighbourhoods.

In many parts of the world, many art pieces have been born out of events of historical significance. Doha too offers a window into a variety of artworks. Hamad International Airport inspires travellers with a wide range of public art pieces by local, regional and international artists. At Doha Fire Station, visually striking murals catches the attention of visitors. The Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) teems with murals and sculptures by local and international artists.

Venues hosting international events such as the Qatar National Convention Center and Doha Exhibition and Convention Center as well as several plush hotels also have their own art installations on display. With museums and galleries opening their doors with safety precautions amid the pandemic, public art presents a good alternative to encounter and appreciate art in an informal and interactive way.

Public art plays a vital role in sparking debate on topical issues and inspiring creativity in shared urban spaces. Qatar Museums is consolidating Qatar’s efforts to become a vibrant center for the arts and culture in the Middle East and beyond. At its core is a commitment to nurturing artistic talent, creating opportunities and developing the skills to service Qatar’s emerging art economy.
