Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani delivered a speech yesterday during the opening session of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, held at the organisation's headquarters in New York. In an emphatic speech H H the Amir spoke about the important topics and issues in the region.
His Highness affirmed that the treacherous Israeli aggression against Qatar constitutes a serious violation of state sovereignty and a blatant, unjustified breach of international norms and conventions. He noted that the entire world was shocked by the circumstances of this heinous act, which Qatar firmly branded as state terrorism.
"Contrary to the Israeli Prime Minister’s claim, this attack does not fall within a supposed right to track down terrorists wherever they may be, but rather constitutes an assault on a mediating, peace-making state whose diplomacy has been devoted to resolving conflicts through peaceful means, and has been making strenuous efforts for two years to achieve a settlement to halt the genocidal war waged against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip," he said.
The Amir stressed that no party resorts to assassinating the very delegation it is negotiating with unless the aim is to derail peace efforts.
He described Israel’s actions as part of a broader pattern of attempting to impose its will on the region, expand settlements, and prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state. He underscored that Israel’s strategy is not only a war against Gaza but also an effort to alter the reality of the occupied territories and enforce new regional dynamics through violence, ethnic cleansing, and the denial of Palestinian rights.
His Highness expressed appreciation for the growing international solidarity with Qatar and the Palestinian cause, welcoming states that have recognised Palestine and calling on others to follow suit. He further reiterated Qatar’s commitment to mediation, noting successes achieved with Egypt and the United States in facilitating hostage releases, brokering truces, and ensuring humanitarian aid despite constant obstacles and disinformation campaigns.
Beyond the region, the Amir highlighted Qatar’s active role in peace efforts in Ukraine and Africa, including mediation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, while also reaffirming support for Syria, Lebanon, and Sudan in their transitions. He concluded by announcing Doha’s hosting of the Second World Summit for Social Development in November 2025 and reaffirmed Qatar’s candidacy to host the 2036 Olympic Games, positioning the country as a hub for dialogue, diplomacy, and peace.
