Hamad International Airport (HIA), the aviation hub of Qatar, has added yet another feather to cap by bagging the title, the second best airport in the world for On-Time Performance (OTP) according to OAG’s Punctuality League report. As per OAG, the leading global provider of digital flight information HIA ranked second in the major airports category (from 20 to 30 million) departing seats per annum) with 85.4 percent of its flights operating on time.
The Punctuality League is based on 58 million flight records using full-year data from 2017 to create a ranking of the best OTP for the world’s largest airlines and airports. HIA newly joined the top 20 airports in the ‘Major Airports’ category within the Punctuality League this year, which is recognised as the world’s definitive measurement of on-time performance.
This is the latest among the numerous awards and accolades the state-of-the-art airport has won since its opening on April 30, 2014. Last year itself HIA has won several awards such as the Best Airport in the Middle East for the fourth consecutive year and Best Staff Service in the Middle East three years in a row by the Skytrax World Airport Awards. Skytrax has also recognised the international airport’s well-appreciated service with ‘five star’ airport status, making it the only airport in the Middle East awarded with the status. HIA also bagged the Best Customer Experience Initiative award at the Future Travel Experience Asia Awards 2018, recognising its month-long FIFA World Cup celebration during the FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Global Traveller Leisure Lifestyle Awards has bestowed the Best Airport Layovers accolade on HIA and it won the Best Airport in the Middle East 2018 at the Global Traveller’s GT Tested Reader Survey Awards in the Los Angeles for the second year in a row.
Instead of resting on its laurels HIA has always been striving to keep up its position as the best airport in the world by providing the best-in class facilities to the millions of international travellers passing through it. HIA has launched its Phase Two expansion, which marks a major development in the airport’s growth and Qatar’s Transportation and Communications sector. The expansion will enable HIA to accommodate over 53 million passengers annually by 2022.
The construction of the Airport City will provide significant future investment opportunities including a free-trade zone, office and business complex and hotels. A new cargo terminal will also be added which will increase the airport’s capacity to three million tonnes per year.
The State of Qatar is raising its honour and prestige everyday with wholesome development in all sectors, which definitely making the country’s detractors, especially the neighbouring quartet who imposed the unjustified siege on the country, envious.
