In three years’ time, Qatar will host the biggest sports event the Arab world has ever seen. Qatar is gearing up to host a memorable FIFA World Cup, and preparations are being carried out at a marvellous pace.
Within few days, fans will get to experience what is in store for them at the global football extravaganza when Qatar hosts the 24th edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup which will be followed by the FIFA Club World Cup in December, 2019. The two events are no match for the FIFA spectacle, but the world will get to have a glimpse of Qatar’s passion for sports as well as the ability to host mega sporting events.
One of the Qatar 2022 venues, the majestic Khalifa International Stadium will be the cynosure of all eyes during the Gulf Cup while two more stadiums, namely the Al Janoub Stadium and the Education City Stadium, will host matches during the FIFA Club World Cup next month.
The Secretary-General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), Hassan Al Thawadi, has said preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2022 are in full swing. He described the upcoming Arabian Gulf Cup and FIFA Club World Cup as golden opportunities to test readiness for 2022, and said fans should expect great weather, outstanding hospitality and a raft of entertainment options when Qatar hosts the biggest single-sport event in the world.
Al Thawadi, in an interview, also outlined his vision for the tournament’s legacy which includes breaking down stereotypes about the country and region.
Al Thawadi said that preparations for Qatar 2022 are coming along very well and we have two stadiums already operational and by the end of the first half of next year, we will have three more stadiums ready and operational. By the end of 2021, all eight of our stadiums will have been inaugurated, tested and be tournament-ready.”
“All the national infrastructure work is also being completed according to schedule. The metro system is being tested and commissioned and will be operational by the end of this year. The entire system will be ready by the first half of next year.” he added.
Recently, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) also signed an agreement with MSC Cruises to charter two cruise liners to accommodate fans during the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar. The cruise liners, which feature a combined capacity of 4,000 cabins, will act as floating hotels during the tournament. They will be berthed at Doha Port, giving fans a spectacular view of the West Bay skyline.
A delegation of seven mayors of cities from the United States, which currently visited Qatar, also praised Qatar’s preparations to host 2022 FIFA World Cup.
