The State of Qatar has been an active partner of multilateral institutions including the United Nations to promote sustainable development around the world, and Doha has called for united multilateral efforts to tackle global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.
As Doha emerges as a hub for multilateral action and diplomacy in the region, a number of UN agencies have started their operations out of the Qatari capital. Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, while addressing the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, announced that the United Nations House in Doha will be inaugurated soon.
The announcement by the Amir of opening the UN House in Doha came on the 50th anniversary of the State of Qatar joining the global body. “During the past five decades, the relationship between Qatar and the international organisation has been characterised by close cooperation and the establishment of exemplary partnerships in various fields,” said the Amir, affirming Qatar’s continued support to the United Nations agencies and fulfilling its commitments. Amir said Qatar’s partnership with the UN as well as other multilateral institutions and efforts is aimed at promoting peace and security in the world.
The State of Qatar has championed the multilateral approach to solve some of the most pressing issues in the region and beyond through dialogue and negotiations. The State played a key role in efforts to achieve a negotiated solution to conflict in Afghanistan. It has hosted years-long talks and negotiations between the US and all Afghan sides and has remained engaged with the Taliban, who now control Afghanistan.
After the fall of the previous Afghan government and amid the chaotic pullout of US and Nato forces from Afghanistan, the State helped in evacuating more than 58,000 people from Afghanistan, and has stepped up efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan.
Qatar has also, from day one, championed the multilateral approach to tackle the pandemic, contributing early on to Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization and sending Covid-related medical supplies to dozens of countries. Being strategically located, Qatar has for decades served as a bridge between Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas; and has also emerged as an aviation and trade hub over the years.
The Cabinet, which met yesterday, welcomed the announcement by the Amir in his speech of the inauguration of the United Nations House in Doha soon, as Doha has become a hub of international multilateral action in the region, and in light of the distinguished relationship between Qatar and the UN.
