Qatar has sent letters to UN Secretary-General H E Antonio Guterres and Permanent Representative of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the UN and President of the Security Council for the month of July H E Zenon Mukongo Ngay regarding Iran’s attacks on Qatari territory. The letters said the attacks constitute a blatant violation of Qatar’s sovereignty, a threat to its security and territorial integrity, and an unacceptable escalation that jeopardises regional security and stability.
The letters referred to Iran’s targeting of the Qatari tanker Al Rekayyat, while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz on July 7, 2026. The letters also notes that Qatar’s Ministry of Defence announced that the country came under a missile attack on July 12, 2026, with the Qatari Armed Forces intercepting multiple ballistic missiles. The Ministry of Interior said three people, including a child, were injured by falling debris after the interception missiles. The letters say that the Qatari Armed Forces intercepted another missile attack targeting the country on July 17, 2026.
The letters reiterated Qatar’s condemnation of the Iranian attacks, calling them a dangerous and unacceptable escalation that pose a threat to the country’s security as well as to regional and international stability. They say the attacks constitute a flagrant violation of international law, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols.
The letters also said they violated UN Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), which condemned in the strongest terms the attacks by Iran against Qatar and other countries in the region, and demanded an immediate halt to all such attacks.
The letters reaffirmed Qatar’s right to respond in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter and the inherent right of self-defence under international law, emphasising that it will take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, security, and the safety of its citizens and residents.
