The Supervisory Committee for the 7th Central Municipal Council (CMC) elections yesterday announced the names of 29 winning candidates in the elections that took place yesterday. The committee pointed out that 40.7% of the voters cast their votes in the 27 electoral constituencies, as the candidates of two of the constituencies were elected unopposed. Various state agencies made coordinated efforts to ensure the election's success and run it according to the plan.
Popular participation in this electoral is a patriotic duty that every citizen was keen to fulfil, as the process enhances public participation in decision-making and instils the spirit of responsibility in the hearts of the young generations.
The preparations were positively reflected in the voting process, where the accumulated awareness of the society contributed to the election's success and the announcement of the result as scheduled and according to the plan set by the organisers. The most characteristic element of the CMC elections was the smooth conduct of the process and a high level of commitment to the laws and regulations governing the elections. This enabled voters to choose their candidates based on their competence, honesty and experience, and the electoral programmes of the candidates.
According to the Ministry of Interior (MoI), 110 candidates, including four women, participated in the elections yesterday. The candidates competed in 29 constituencies for 29 seats, the total number of seats in the CMC. Constituency “11-Abu Hamour” topped the electoral districts regarding the number of candidates with 11 candidates. The elections enjoyed media coverage and discussions across various media platforms.
The Director of the Elections Department under the MoI and Chairman of the Supervisory Committee overseeing the 7th Central Municipal Council (CMC) elections, Major-General Majed Ibrahim Al Khulaifi, in a statement, thanked the MoI, the Supreme Judiciary Council, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the Ministry of Municipality, and various media organisations.
CMC election campaigns are regulated by law issued under the Minister of Interior’s Decision No.7 of 1998, which stipulates that each candidate must obtain approval from the Ministry of Interior to start the campaign. The candidates were encouraged not to use any propaganda materials or means that harm national unity, the security and stability of society, and to avoid tribalism or sectarianism. Slogans, expressions and images used in the election campaigns were regulated to not conflict with the religious and social values of the Qatari society. Violating public decency or the prevailing societal traditions was discouraged during the election campaign.
