The State of Qatar has built a robust healthcare system that distinguishes it as one of the best and fastest-growing in the region. It has been ranked among the world’s top five health systems that provide quality health care.
The health sector has made significant progress in recent years to protect and support the health and well-being of Qatar’s population. The system provides free or subsidised public healthcare, where the population enjoys a variety of services from public and private healthcare providers.
Qatar’s vision of “Health For All” and health security strategy within the Qatar National Vision 2030 framework have enabled the health system to respond to any health circumstances. The health system has demonstrated resilience and swift response to the successive waves of the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020. The system effectively managed the pandemic and overcame three waves due to its experience, commitment and solidarity.
The healthcare system in Qatar continued its growth and development by increasing investment in new facilities, services and technologies. The state prioritises developing this sector with investment aimed at harnessing its capabilities and exploiting the available advanced technology based on a scientific and cooperative approach among all government agencies, local and international partnerships, and community participation.
Due to this massive investment in the health sector, the number of hospitals in the public sector increased to 16 in 2022, compared to six hospitals in 2011, when the first National Health Strategy was launched.
Within the framework of efforts to host the World Cup Qatar 2022, this sector received a considerable share of the state’s investments, so the number of health centres and public and private hospitals doubled. Several facilities were completed last year and before the start of the World Cup.
Thanks to the comprehensive health strategy adopted by the country, the World Health Organization (WHO) certified all the municipalities of Qatar as “Healthy Cities” in 2022, thus becoming the first country in the Eastern Mediterranean to obtain accreditation for all of its cities.
While people in Qatar enjoy the festive Eid Al Fitr atmosphere, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is ready to deal with any health emergencies and receive patients during the holidays. However, HMC has urged the public to seek healthcare services at suitable facilities during Eid holidays and beyond as all health centres and other health facilities are prepared to deal with patients who require care for non-emergency and non-life-threatening conditions. Emergency Departments at Hamad General Hospital, Al Wakra Hospital, Al Khor Hospital, Aisha Bint Hamad Al Attiyah Hospital and Hazm Mebaireek General Hospital are open and working 24x7 during Eid holidays.
