Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani participated and addressed the 77th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 77) yesterday at the organisation’s headquarters in New York City, US. The theme for this year’s UNGA is, “A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges”.
H H the Amir touched upon all the regional conflicts and international issues in his comprehensive speech at the UNGA and presented Qatar’s clear vision for the future. He called for a ceasefire to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and urged all concerned parties to find an immediate peaceful solution to the conflict while also reminding all the delegates that the Palestinian cause remains unresolved and reiterated the need for the Security Council to assume its responsibility by compelling Israel to end the Palestinian territories occupation and establish a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He reminded the international community that “in light of the failure to implement the resolutions of international legitimacy and with the persistent change of facts on the ground, the settler occupation has pursued a fait accompli policy, and this may change the rules of the conflict as well as the global solidarity configuration in the future.”
By highlighting Qatar’s prudent decision to invest in liquefied natural gas decades ago, he said that “We have now been able to embark on the expansion of the North Gas Field, which will play a pivotal role in mitigating the energy shortage crisis in significant parts of the world.”
H H the Amir in his speech pointed out that the pressure to halt investments in fossil energy before preparing sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives has triggered energy supply shortages. “There is no doubt that climate change and environment protection, in general, require us to diversify energy sources as soon as possible, but we have to provide energy in the meantime and realistically realize that the future of energy would include a diverse mix of its sustainable sources, such as solar energy, hydrogen, wind energy, and hydrocarbon sources,” he added.
Talking about the much-anticipated event of the year FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, H H the Amir said that Qatar will welcome the world for the mega-event, which will be held for the first time in an Arab Muslim country.
“We will open our doors in Doha for all without discrimination to enjoy the football matches and the amazing atmosphere of the tournament, in addition to witnessing the economic and cultural development in my country,” he said.
H H the Amir concluded his speech by saying, “on behalf of my people and on my own behalf, I invite you all to come to Qatar and enjoy this unique tournament, you are all welcome.”
