Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani is scheduled to address the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) today in New York.

During his speech, H H the Amir is expected to address Qatari policy and the State’s stances towards the current most prominent local, Arab and international issues.

Eighty world leaders are expected to participate in the activities of the new session in person. In contrast, about a third of the leaders of the 193 member states would deliver their speeches via video recordings.

According to reports, world leaders would focus on boosting efforts to fight climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced them to send video statements for the annual gathering last year.

In previous UNGA, Qatar has stressed dialogue as a tool to solving global challenges. It has steadily supported the UN in achieving its goals, including maintaining international peace and security, supporting international development, promoting human rights, providing humanitarian assistance, and participating in collective action to address existing and emerging challenges facing the world, especially climate change.

Financially, Qatar has contributed significantly to various UN establishments. In 2018, Qatar pledged $500m to various UN programmes, including the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Children’s Fund (Unicef), the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

In 2019, on the sidelines of the 74th UNGA, H H the Amir participated in the UN Climate Action Summit, which UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held. He announced Qatar’s contribution of $100m to support small developing island states and the least developed states to deal with climate change, natural hazards, environmental challenges and build the capacity to counter their destructive effects.

Qatar’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is buttressed through entities like the Qatar Foundation and its subsidiaries.

QF, through Education Above All Foundation (EAA) and its global partners Unicef and Unesco, has marked two International Day to Protect Education from Attack.

Early this year, Qatar and the UN signed multiple agreements to open new UN offices in Doha, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) office and the new UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The Office of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Programme on Parliamentary Participation in Preventing and Combating Terrorism (UNOCT) was also officially inaugurated in Doha on June 16.

Furthermore, Qatar reflects its support for UN goals and ensures equality and fairness for all through its Permanent Missions to the UN in New York and Geneva.
