Sustainability which is the need of the hour to counter growing threat of climate change has been the top priority of Qatar in shaping its development plans.
Qatar has launched number environmentally-friendly initiatives in recent years to preserve the environment and its natural resources for coming generations.
In all mega development projects being executed in the country, sustainability is the key consideration. The best example of the country’s environment-friendly approach is Lusail City which is the first and largest sustainable city in Qatar with ambitious and ground breaking concepts that reinforce every facet of Qatar’s National Vision 2030.
The latest example of this approach is Kahramaa’s recent announcement. To cut carbon footprint in the country, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has announced that 20 percent of electric charging stations will rely on renewable and clean energy.
In line with sustainability goals stated in Qatar National Vision 2030, Kahramaa continues, through National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), to enhance the infrastructure of electric vehicles’ charging stations, as 20% of these stations are intended to be powered by renewable energy, Kahramaa said.
To serve the purpose, first ‘Tarsheed Photovoltaic Station for Energy Storage and Charging Electric Vehicles’ has already been installed at Kahramaa Complex at Mesaimeer. Last year in November, Kahramaa represented by Tarsheed had also launched the Electric Vehicles and Charging Infrastructure Guideline.
This guideline came to support the establishment of the infrastructure regulations for electric vehicles in the country which will encourage the spread of these types of vehicles. To enhance the State of Qatar’s efforts to organise a carbon-neutral FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, over 1,100 electric buses will be deployed to ferry the spectators during FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
The Public Works Authority in coordination with Kahramaa and the Ministry of Transport and Communications is working to build four parking lots for electric buses to ferry spectators during matches of FIFA World Cup 2022,” said Director of Tarsheed and Energy Efficiency at Kahramaa Abdulaziz Ahmed Al Hammadi in April this year.
Meanwhile the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has also undertaken many plans and strategies that focus on preserving the Qatari land, protecting endangered trees, planting many Qatari wild trees, and is working to multiply endangered animals such as the Arabian Oryx and Re’em, as well as preserving aquatic ecosystems through continuous monitoring of country’s marine environment.
