OVER 140 world leaders have come together in New York to attend the 78th session of the UN General Assembly and are discussing pressing global issues and solutions.
Secretary-General António Guterres yesterday warned the world is “becoming unhinged” and underscored the United Nations’ raison d’être, to resolve global crises during times of “maximum danger and minimum agreement.”
“People are looking to their leaders for a way out of this mess, yet in the face of all this and more, geopolitical divisions are undermining our capacity to respond,” he added.
These comments emphasized what Qatar has been promoting on international platforms the necessity of following an approach of dialogue and diplomacy to end wars and crises.
Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani chaired the State of Qatar’s delegation in the opening session of the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) yesterday and delivered a speech that touched on the issues of Arabs and Muslims and humanity as a whole.
During his comprehensive address, he touched upon various pressing global issues especially those faced by the people in the region, particularly the Palestinian people.
“It is not acceptable for the Palestinian people to remain prisoners of the Israeli settler occupation arbitrariness, and the rejection of any just political solution in accordance with the principles of international legitimacy by successive Israeli governments.,” His Highness said while stressing that the failure of the international organizations to act against the occupation is only exacerbating the problem.
Reiterating Qatar’s stand of dialogue as a way to resolve international disputes, H H the Amir said “In the context of talking about our region, we reiterate our appreciation of the detente witnessed this year, as represented by constructive dialogue and re-establishment of ties between the sisterly countries, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Republic of Turkiye.”
His Highness in his speech called on all parties to respect international law, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and to seek a peaceful, lasting resolution, especially in the case of war in Europe.
“The path to resolve conflicts through peaceful means is a long and strenuous path, but it is less costly than wars, and our commitment to continue our efforts in facilitating and making peace is a firm commitment deeply rooted in the core of our foreign policy,” Amir stressed in his speech.
In our era of unprecedented progress, challenges persist. By responsibly harnessing technology and addressing global issues, we can build a brighter future for all.
